Rug Maintenance & Care

Protecting your investment — and your family's health

Why Professional Cleaning Matters More Than You Think

Even the most house-proud home cannot escape the invisible enemy that settles deep inside every rug. No matter how diligently you hoover, dust particles — some as fine as ground black pepper — work their way down through the pile and accumulate at the base of the fibres. Over time, combined with the natural humidity in any home, this dust hardens into a compacted layer that no domestic vacuum can reach.

As a general rule, we recommend a professional deep clean at least every six years. In busier households — homes with children, pets, or high foot traffic — every three to four years is far more sensible. The cost of cleaning is always a fraction of the cost of replacing a rug that has been allowed to deteriorate from the inside out.

The Science

The Hidden World Beneath Your Feet

That fine, compacted dust at the base of your rug pile is not merely unsightly — it is a thriving habitat for dust mites.

Dust Mites Are Everywhere

A single gram of dust can contain up to 1,000 dust mites and 250,000 of their faecal pellets. These microscopic creatures feed on shed human skin cells, and your rug provides the perfect warm, humid environment for them to thrive.

They Trigger Allergies & Asthma

Dust mite droppings are one of the most common triggers of allergic rhinitis, eczema, and asthma. The proteins in their waste become airborne when disturbed — by walking across the rug, for instance — and are then inhaled. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable.

Hardened Dust Destroys Fibres

As fine dust particles settle at the base of the pile and harden with moisture, they act like tiny shards of glass. Every footstep grinds them against the wool or silk fibres, cutting them from the inside. This is why rugs can appear to thin and fade even when they are not walked on heavily.

Humidity Accelerates the Problem

British homes typically maintain a relative humidity of 40–60%. Dust mites thrive at anything above 50%. Central heating creates warm, slightly humid conditions at floor level — ideal for mite colonies to multiply rapidly, particularly in autumn and winter.

You Cannot See the Damage Building

The deterioration caused by embedded dust and mites is almost entirely invisible until it is advanced. By the time you notice thinning, brittleness, or a persistent musty odour, significant damage has already occurred. Regular professional cleaning catches the problem before it becomes irreversible.

Moths Love a Dirty Rug

Carpet moths are drawn to soiled wool fibres. The natural oils, skin cells, and organic debris trapped in an uncleaned rug provide exactly the nutrition their larvae need. A professionally cleaned rug is far less attractive to moths — making cleaning one of the most effective forms of moth prevention available.

Signs Your Rug Needs Attention

  • A musty or stale smell that persists even after hoovering
  • Visible flattening or matting of the pile, particularly in low-traffic areas
  • Colours that appear duller or greyer than when the rug was new
  • Increased sneezing, watery eyes, or allergy symptoms in the household
  • Fine dust visible when you beat or shake the rug outdoors
  • Small bare patches or thinning — a possible sign of moth larvae activity

Everyday Care

Between Professional Cleans: Daily Care Tips

1

Hoover Regularly — But Gently

Hoover your rug at least once a week, always in the direction of the pile. Use a suction-only setting where possible; beater bars can stress the fibres of finer rugs. Never hoover the fringe — it will tangle and break.

2

Rotate Your Rug Annually

Sunlight fades and foot traffic wears unevenly. Rotating your rug 180° once a year ensures even ageing and prevents one area from deteriorating faster than another.

3

Use a Quality Underlay

A good underlay does far more than prevent slipping. It cushions every footstep, reducing the grinding action of embedded particles against the fibres, and it creates a slight air gap that reduces moisture build-up at the base of the pile.

4

Act on Spills Immediately

Blot — never rub — any liquid spill with a clean white cloth. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Avoid harsh household cleaners; many contain bleach or alkaline agents that permanently strip colour from natural dyes.

5

Air Your Rug Outdoors

On a dry, breezy day, hanging your rug outside for a few hours allows moisture to escape and UV light to naturally suppress mite populations. Avoid direct, prolonged sunlight which can fade colours.

6

Address Moth Risk Proactively

If you store rugs, roll them pile-inward around acid-free paper and seal in a breathable cotton bag. Never use plastic — it traps moisture. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets offer mild deterrence, but professional treatment is the only reliable solution if moths are already present.
